She’s an Artist

This past year has been epic for Lady Gaga. To some, she’s the manifestation of pop music and to others, she’s a raunchier version of Britney Spears. I had to admit when i was first introduced to Lady Gaga’s music I was hardly mind boggled but the more and more i researched her, the more and more i began to respect what she was doing. First, she hired a team of young artists and designers ( The Haus of Gaga) to design and build costumes, stage props and sets for each performance. She treats each performance as an installation. While incorporating pop music into what she’s doing many devalue all of her efforts to keep things fresh because pop music is not underground. But i respect Lady Gaga for not apologizing for the manner in which she’s achieved fame. And I continue to get my mind blown by her performances and stage ensembles. She pays homage to what some people believe are some of the most revolutionary musicians to date (i.e David Bowie, Queen, and Grace Jones)

My fried Tyler Brooks and I have had a blog for what could possibly be a year now? I’m not entirely sure. But we started it primarily because we know that we loved each others taste in music and practically everything that we went our different ways for college, we would need to still have someway to keep each other up to date on what’s going on around us. So our blog is called The Diff’rence, it’s a space for art, fashion, music and to display pretty much whatever we want. But since we’re both photographers we’ve been uploading our work on the site. The Story Behind Jonathan Harris Finding Stories

Jonathan Harris describes his interests in stories. He talks about his interest developing from his own personal story and it manifesting into finding out other people’s stories. It began small, he started collecting memorabilia that he found such as pictures, scraps etc and keeping these items. His fascination later developed into a long journey to Bhutan where he asked people about their wishes. He then took pictures of their hands as well as portraits. These little notions prove that no matter how different our stories all are, we can connect with people because we all have wishes. I think this is relative to art, you don’t have to necessarily understand the artist’s point of view but understanding what drove them is powerful in its own respect.

The ideas expressed in this TED video really challenge how society constitutes value. He references Andy Warhol and Coca Cola. Warhol says that he loves Coca-Cola because one can attain the same quality of the product regardless of social class. This means that a real successful product should be versatile and be attainable to all walks of life. The speaker on the video also goes on to acknowledge how products are presented. The slightest change in a product can work for or against the product. Example: Shredded Diamond Wheaties. He also talks about the lack of correlation between quality and enjoyment. People just tend to enjoy things more when they are aware of how expensive something is i.e celebrities, sports stars etc. This is a way to learn how to market ones art in the real world.

This is a site that i initially found on stumbledupon.com and I didn’t realize how inclusive the site actually is. The entire site is a way to make daft punk sound effects using your keyboard. The color scheme of the website reflects the daft punk aesthetic which makes the user feel more attached to the idea that they are on the right path to making music like their favorite techno djs. They have 3 options which the computer user can chose from. Overall, it’s not much you can gain from the site but the content is light, fun and harmless.

Description of something Beautiful in my Room

Before coming here, i knew i needed something in my room that would always remind me of Chicago. On one of the last nights, I decided to steal a CTA train map that they display on all trains. There isn’t that much thought put into these train maps but they have been in my life for as long as i could remember. The bold lines of different colors representing different trains that take you to different parts of Chicago. There’s an red line, orange line, pink line, blue line, green line, brown line, purple line and a yellow line. The intricate shape they make where they all intercept which is in the loop is a kaleidoscope of color. The little blank white dots that symbolize the stop in the city where these individual trains makes me taste home. I miss Chicago so much.

Kevin Kelly’s theory pertaining to computers is strange. However, i can somewhat predict that his theory will soon take effect more vividly over time. It’s disturbing to me to know that the computer- now believed to be a necessity in a household, will soon dominate our entire lives more than it already has. Kelly references factors that will either speed or slow down this process. For example, he uses DNA sampling to show that something people pay alot of money for now will be free in years to come. I can’t explain why this baffles me so much. I guess it’s confirming the end of the world? I don’t believe the world will spontaneously combust but i do see it being the end as we know it.

To be honest, Benjamin’s position confused me. I assume he means that the more advance we get technologically, the less significant art will become. If that is his position, i agree to a certain extent. Being a photographer that only uses analogue, i feel the decline in intimacy that art once had. But it is important to acknowledge what art once was and respect where it’s going. He also said the less social significance it has, the more it will be appreciated. Sadly, i do think that’s true. I don’t believe that’s something we should be content with but i do agree with that statement. I think people are prone to enjoy art that lacks social significance because people need outlets to escape. Personally, i believe fantasy is what people want but reality is what they need. But for some, admiring art is an outlet to escape what might be going on in the world. However, what about the artist? How are artists suppose to make art that satisfies them as well as the viewer? The answer is, you can’t. One can’t please both. So i feel as though if people want to art that lacks social depth, then they are contributing to the decline of art as a lifestyle and religion. To make something aesthetically pleasing is only a small percentage of what making art should consist of. I barely understand what art should be but i have an understanding that it has to come from a genuine place. Most artists can’t just make something pretty for the sake of looks. So i guess the conflict is, as artists should we shallow ourselves for the sake of everyone else’s approval? Or should we continue to speak out against whatever it is that is directly or indirectly affecting us through art? Art is a movement, the more we move towards a digital perspective, it will only distract us from what’s actually going on but it doesn’t mean that people won’t respond to it from a social aspect. It’s just another form of compromise that I’m not willing to participate in.

This website has been one of my favorites for a while now. There’s not much to the website besides that it’s extremely current. It’s always updated with latest buzz from the most visited sites such as Twitter, youtube and flickr; just to name a few. It’s usually how i find really interesting videos through youtube. It’s also great for finding out random news. For example, if it wasn’t for this website, i would have never found about the Kanye West/ Taylor Swift incident at the Mtv Vmas. It’s a very helpful site that informs and entertains without completely sucking you in like facebook.I highly recommend this website.
